Arrival of former CARTA bus 3426 in Frederick, Maryland, on the evening of January 16, 2025. This was the culmination of multiple efforts to retrieve the bus from Charleston, South Carolina. After three failed attempts to drive the bus from South Carolina to Maryland under its own power, I ultimately opted to have the bus brought in on a flatbed trailer. The cost was similar to what it would take to mount another trip to Charleston, when you consider the cost of travel, lodging, meals, fuel, etc., but this also guaranteed that the bus would make it.
This photo shows the final stage of 3426's movement off of the trailer. The drive-off was done in two stages, with the bus partially driven off of the trailer, a repositioning of various elements used to hold the bus while it was on the trailer, and then the final movement off of the trailer and onto the ground. Here, the bus is completely off of the trailer, but still traveling over the wood that was used to step the bus down to the pavement.
