Arrival of former CARTA bus 3426 in Frederick, Maryland, on the evening of January 16, 2025. This was the culmination of multiple efforts to retrieve the bus from Charleston, South Carolina. After three failed attempts to drive the bus from South Carolina to Maryland under its own power, I ultimately opted to have the bus brought in on a flatbed trailer. The cost was similar to what it would take to mount another trip to Charleston, when you consider the cost of travel, lodging, meals, fuel, etc., but this also guaranteed that the bus would make it.
This photo shows a custom sign that we programmed for the bus, reading "SS United States". If the bus had made it on the retrieval attempt in September 2024, we would have taken it on our New Jersey trip that same month, and that would have included a stop at the SS United States, which, at the time, was still berthed in Philadelphia.
