Aerial view of Alcatraz Island, a small island located approximately 1.25 miles offshore from San Francisco, California in the San Francisco Bay. The island was home to a federal prison from 1934 to 1963. Since then, the island has been a major tourist attraction. Since 1972, the island is administered by the United States Department of the Interior through the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, and was designated as a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
